What is the history of the Prickly Pear?
A very ancient fruit, probably originating in Mexico, it rests on the blades of a tree that can reach 4-5 metres in height. It is said that the plant arrived in the Old World around 1493, the year Christopher Columbus’ expedition returned to Lisbon. From here it quickly spread throughout the Mediterranean basin where it naturalised to the point of becoming a characteristic element of the Mediterranean landscape.
